The Cloaking Device is a portable device that appears in Perfect Dark. It can turn the user invisible for a limited amount of time. It can be toggled on and off as needed. While in use, if the user fires a weapon or punches while Unarmed, it will deactivate temporarily.
There is an unlockable cheat which gives the player the Cloaking Device in any mission, lasting for 120 seconds. Also, in Combat Simulator, it can take as one of the weapon slots. There, every pickup lasts only 20 seconds.
The Skedar in their homeworld, including the King, also have a cloaking ability, but whether this is from the device or some other means is unknown. As seen from Mr. Blonde, they also seemingly use the device as the hologram for their disguise.
A similar variant is mounted in the RC-P120 as its secondary function.
In-Game Description[]
Uses the light-warping qualities of an alien crystal to create a refractive field around the wearer. Functions as long as there is little kinetic disturbance within the field boundary; the act of firing a gun is enough to cause a return to visibility.
Notes[]
- It is most likely that the "alien crystal" the in-game description mentions comes from the Skedar, seen from the enemies found in the final mission and the fact that Mr. Blonde does carry one in his mission.
- If the Unlimited Ammo cheat is in effect and it is used in missions or Combat Simulator, the Cloaking Device's time limit will become infinite.
- The Perfect Buddies in Co-op also seem to use Cloaking Devices as well; They start missions appearing out of cloaking. When using the Stealth command, they temporarily become invisible for 5 seconds.
Appearances[]
The only time the player gets to use the Cloaking Device is in the bonus mission Mr. Blonde's Revenge, where it lasts for 30 seconds. In the G5 Building mission, there are several cloaked guards in the early part of the level. There are also several dataDyne guards in the mission Deep Sea: Nullify Threat using these devices.

Trivia[]
- There is a Cloaking Device in the Nintendo Gamecube crossover fighting game Super Smash Bros. Melee, which is nearly identical in appearance to Perfect Dark's and has similar functions. The item's trophy does not state the name of the game it originated from, oddly only listing is as "TOP SECRET" (the same thing occurred with GoldenEye 007's Proximity Mine, which also appears in the game), but this is for the international version. The Japanese version of the game, however, indeed confirms Perfect Dark as the item's origins. It does not appear in any sequels since Super Smash Bros. Brawl, almost certainly because Rare was bought by Microsoft Game Studios in 2002.
- If the ending cutscene in missions are triggered and player is using the Cloaking Device, Joanna will still remain cloaked.
- Although the Cloaking Device is designed to make users invisible, it is possible to still see enemy targets using the device at very close range, as a faint image of them is visible. This means the gadget, in reality, only makes them virtually transparent.
- In Deep Sea, when the IR Scanner is used, it completely bypasses the Cloaking Device's reflective field and still makes the target fully visible even if cloaked.
